Acne

About
A series of little bumps that can appear either on the face or on other parts of the body. The bumps, normally called pimples or zits, can be categorized as blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps (pimples) or cysts. Plugs can develop and can prevent the sebum (oily substance) from the sebaceous gland from reaching the outer skin.

Notes
  • Make sure you are taking supplements for overall good health. If you are not taking these basic supplements, we recommend Enfuz from Vitabase. When you take a small packet of pills each day, you get all the basic nutrition you need. Each packet contains a multi-vitamin, CoQ10 (for heart health), Omega 3, Vitamin D-3, a probiotic, and a powerful set of antioxidants to help your body fight off disease.
  • An acute case of acne can be a sign of a serious hormonal disorder due to tumors in the adrenal glands or ovaries. May also experience other problems such as irregular menstrual periods and increase in facial hair. Should consult a physician for any of these symptoms.
  • An effective over-the-counter acne treatment includes a topical salve or cream such as Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Applying this to the acne sore may decrease inflammation and assist healing. It is thought that by using this consistently it can alleviate scarring from severe cystic acne. It is best to buy DMSO from Health Food Stores only as they are specifically used for therapeutic purposes. DMSO found in hardware stores is a commercial-grade and should not be used for therapeutic purposes. Usually as soon as the DMSO touches your skin you will get a sensation in your mouth of a garlicky tastes and odor. This is not harmful and in some cases is temporary.
  • Antibiotics usually prescribed for acne are: Tetracycline, Erythromycin, or Clindamycin. Usually these will be either a cream or an oral form. Minocycline is also prescribed for those that find the above mentioned antibiotic ineffective. Minocycline does have side effects like shortness of breath and joint pain. Some antibiotics have caused Candidiasis (yeast infections) for a few people, which has worsened acne. Due to the fact that some antibiotics kill "friendly" bacteria as well as "unfriendly" bacteria you should take acidophilus while taking the antibiotic.
  • Blackheads that appear to be ready to burst out, can be removed by using a blackhead extractor. Gently applying pressure with the extractor around the blackhead usually will help it to pop out. Never try to squeeze them out with your fingers as this will bruise and break the skin, leave red and blotchy spots on your skin for days, and may ever break tiny veins. This damage to the skin will sometimes allow bacteria to enter below the skins surface, infecting the tissue around it. In some cases it may be necessary to consult a Dermatologist.
  • Factors that may cause acne are greasy makeup, hereditary, some medicines you may be taking and food you eat. Factors that may help to prevent acne are: Eating a well balanced diet, keeping your skin clean using proper products for your skin type, and check with a dermatologist regarding your body chemistry.
  • Medication for the treatment of moderate cases of acne is topical tretinoin (Retin-A). Retin-A helps with healing and cuts down on the formation of new pimples. Do not use this medication if you are pregnant. Possible side effects of taking this medication are: it makes the skin sensitive to sun damage, and there it is not known what the repercussions might be for long term use. Some related forms of Tretinoin are in the working, if they are released they might not be as drying to the skin.
  • Medication for the treatment of severe acne is an oral medication, isotretinoin (accutane). The duration of treatment is about 5 months, and is believed to be a cure for acne. Unfortunately there are possibilities of side effects from this medication such as: dry skin, nosebleeds, headaches, and pains in joints and muscles. It can also cause dangerous birth defects if taken while you are pregnant, for instance fetal brain deformities. Has been noted that if you become pregnant within 2 months that you finished taking this medication, these dangerous defects can still happen. Females should not take Isotretinoin unless you are taking birth control pills or past child bearing years. Some patients, while taking Accutane or soon after stopping Accutane have developed mental problems and suicide. The Archives of Dermatology published an article regarding a study of Accutane and discovered that it may create a los of bone density, which could develop into osteoporosis in later years.
  • Niacinamide is vital for healthy skin as it improves circulation and assists the body with metabolizing carbohydrates, fats and proteins. This brings fresh blood to the surface of the skin that keeps pores clean of clogging toxins and in healing the damaged skin tissues.
  • Numerous over the counter products for acne contain benzoyl peroxide that is very drying and has been known to induce allergic reactions in some people. Keep this product away from the eyes and mouth.
  • Studies are being done at this time on developing and uses of androgen-blocking drugs to bar the oil glands from being stimulated by hormonal functions.
  • The Department of Dermatology of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in New South Wales, Australia conducted research on the 5% tea tree oil and found that it works as well as the 5% benzoyl peroxide product for the majority of people, minus the allergic reactions.
