Athlete's Foot


About
Athlete's Foot is a condition of the feet which is caused by a fungus that is similar to mold in appearance. The feet actually become infected, itchy, cracked, and moist.

  • People that have recurring fungal infections of the feet should be very careful to use dry, clean socks on when changing their underwear or dressing as the fungus can be transmitted to the groin area.
  • People that have trouble with athlete's foot may gain the most relief from over-the-counter antifungal drugs called as azoles. A few of them contain clotrimazole (i.e. Lotrimin AF); miconazole (i.e. Micatin or Zeabsorb-AF); or undecylenic acid (i.e. Cruex or Desenex). Another competitor on the market today which is also an antifungal medication is terbinafine (i.e. Lamisil).


Advice
  • Be extra careful when in public areas like locker rooms. Always wear your own shoes and socks and use your own towel.
  • Cold compresses will help alleviate some of the pain and itching that comes with this infection. Burow's solution in a pint of cold water can be applied with a white cotton cloth to your feet for fifteen to twenty minutes several times a day.
  • Include vitamins A, B, and C in supplement form in your diet.
  • Raw fruits and vegetables, broiled skinless chicken, broiled fish, whole grains, yogurt, and other food containing acidophilus are important parts of a balanced diet.
  • Shoes that allow breathing room for your feet are best. Stay away from rubber or vinyl shoes. Rotate your shoes on a daily basis if possible. Do not wear wet shoes.
  • Stay away from fried or greasy foods, processed foods, cola, refined grains, and sugar.
  • Take special care of your feet. Be sure to keep feet dry, remembering to dry them thoroughly between the toes after bathing or showering. Change towel daily. Absorbent cotton socks are best. Shoes should be aired out daily. Wear clean socks every day. The best way to wash everything (towels, socks, etc) that touches the infected area is with hot water and chlorine bleach.
  • Treat your feet to garlic. Use garlic powder or chop up raw garlic (and place in gauze) to put in your shoes. This will soak into your feet and help the fungal infection.
  • Until the infection has cleared, soak your feet daily in vinegar and water (equal parts of each). Once thoroughly dried, rub olive oil on them. You can also soak your feet in one pint of warm water with two teaspoons of salt for ten minutes.
  • Visit your doctor or another healthcare professional if the condition worsens or does not clear up within four weeks. This may indicate a more serious infection.
