Bedsores

About
Ulcers that are found on areas of the skin that are under pressure from lying in bed, sitting in wheelchairs, wearing a cast, or being immobile for a long period of time.

Notes
  • Make sure you are taking supplements for overall good health. If you are not taking these basic supplements, we recommend Enfuz from Vitabase. When you take a small packet of pills each day, you get all the basic nutrition you need. Each packet contains a multi-vitamin, CoQ10 (for heart health), Omega 3, Vitamin D-3, a probiotic, and a powerful set of antioxidants to help your body fight off disease.
  • It is very important to keep pressure off bedsores even with the type of bandages used. Available are absorbent foam-like bandages that help the healing process and do aid in relieving pressure on affected areas. Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) applied topically to the affected area has proven to be beneficial to healing of the bedsores. Health food stores carry Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), a byproduct of wood processing, liquid that when applied topically to affected areas reduces pain, swelling and promotes healing. Usually as soon as the DMSO touches your skin a garlicky body odor and taste in your mouth appear. This is temporary and not a problem. Commercial-grade DMSO found in hardware stores is not to be used for healing purposes.
  • Nourishing diets are beneficial in prevention of bedsores. Many people that have developed bedsores had inadequate nutrients such as, zinc and vitamins A, E, B2, and C. It is important that these patients take multivitamins and mineral supplements daily. They should also include lots of fresh fruits in their diet. Vitamins A and E are beneficial in mending bedsores. Vitamin C is another excellent vitamin as it is beneficial for the skin and blood vessels and also acts as an anti-inflammatory.
  • Once bedsores develop a regimen of turning the patient regularly, keeping the skin clean and dry, ensure no pressure areas are developing must be implemented. There are air cushions, gels, and other types of forms for every part of the body that can be utilized to aid in reducing and eliminating bedsores. For patients that lie in one position for longer periods of time than is desired, air mattress have proven to be very effective in keeping pressure off sensitive areas.
