Bulimia

About
Eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by fasting, self-induced vomiting or the use of diuretics and laxatives.

Notes
  • Make sure you are taking supplements for overall good health. If you are not taking these basic supplements, we recommend Enfuz from Vitabase. When you take a small packet of pills each day, you get all the basic nutrition you need. Each packet contains a multi-vitamin, CoQ10 (for heart health), Omega 3, Vitamin D-3, a probiotic, and a powerful set of antioxidants to help your body fight off disease.
  • Bulimia used to be thought of as "just a food addition." This was erroneous, as other causes have been uncovered such as low self-esteem, psychological, biological, and even factors that arise from societal pressures.
  • Per an article that appeared in the October, 1997, issue of The Harvard Mental Health Letter, diabetic women often lose weight after binging by lowering their intake of insulin. This can be serious as it can harm the eye tissue and increase chances for diabetic retinopathy, which can escalate into blindness.
  • Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Duke University feel that a hormone that is an appetite controlling agent may be the cause for those with bulimia to not feel satisfied after eating. Evidently, eating does not produce enough production of the hormone cholecystolinin-pancreozymin (CCK) which is in the small intestine and the brain. In order to feel satisfied, these individuals need to keep eating all the time and over-consume. More research still needs to be conducted, however, in order to determine if this is the only cause of binge eating.
  • The University of Iowa College of Medicine as well as the University of Wisconsin both discovered that lowering weight levels during athletic training could lead to bulimia. When they did a survey, 2 percent of 700 high-school wrestlers did binge eating followed by vomiting, fasting, excessive exercise, or the use of laxatives to prevent gaining weight.
  • Treatment of bulimia is best tackled with the help of both a psychological specialist (who can uncover the underlying causes of the disorder) and a physician (who can monitor and treat the physical well-being.) Treatment may need to be over an extended length of time.

Advice
  • Always eat healthy snacks.
  • Do not eat any sugars. Foods to stay away from is heavy starches, junk food, and white flour products. When taking sugar out of your diet you may feel tired, headaches, depression, irritability, and anxiety till your body adjusts.
  • Do not give in to a craving. Cravings often lead to a binge.
  • Eat a lot of smaller meals and always eat breakfast.
  • Eat very slowly and quit eating if you feel sick or uncomfortable.
  • Find trigger points and stay away from them. You can locate these triggers by keeping a food journal with a price list and whom you were with and doing.
  • Important to have a high fiber diet and vegetables and complex carbohydrates as possible.
  • Only have positive relationships with people. Do not have negative relationships to pull you down.
  • Relax reduce your stress, practice breathing exercises, meditate, yoga, and exercise regularly.
  • To improve serotonin levels you need to take 5-hydroxy L-tryptophan.
  • You need to control other aspects like shopping, exercise, or alcohol consumption, just anything.
