• New research on DHEA is giving hope to many cancer patients. DHEA stands for dehydroepiandrosterone. Studies are still on-going regarding its positive and negative benefits for cancer prevention due to an enzyme it contains that prohibits cancer cell growth. But studies being done on 7-keto DHEA are showing that it may be a better option to DHEA in the treatment of cancers such as, breast cancer, endometrial, uterine and prostate cancers. One of the reasons 7-keto DHEA may be a better option is that it is not changed into testosterone or estrogens in the body.
• 1. Antiostatin and endostatin are encouraging drugs that inhibit new blood vessels from growing and feeding cancerous tumors.
• 1. Lutein - studies show this carotenoid may have prevention possibilities. Foods high in lutein are: carrots, corn, kale, spinach, Swiss chard, collard, mustard greens, red peppers, dill, parsley, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes and red, blue and purple fruits.

Unfortunately as with most of the cancer fighting drugs there are side effects, some of these are: nausea, vomiting, tingling, loss of feeling, and inflammation of the nerves in the hands and feet, irregularities in glucose levels, alkaline phosphatase, and liver function test were disclosed. Some other side effects noted were, weakness, itching, dizziness, and drowsiness.

• Cervical cancer mortality has decreased by approximately 70 percent since women have been having regular Pap smears done. Unfortunately, these tests are not always correct, it is believed that as much as 5 to 10 percent have reported false-negative readings. Some of these incorrect reading have been found to be due to sampling errors. Women who do not follow the preparation procedure they are instructed to follow before the test is one of the main problems. Another reason for incorrect results is defective cell collection, these are collected from the entire cervical surface and placed on a slide, and immediately preserved. Again it is of the utmost importance that women follow the preparation procedure given to them prior to having a Pap smear procedure performed.
• Cigarette smoking causes at least 87 percent of lung cancers and is also accountable for larynx, oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, and bladder. There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke and at least 60 of these are known to cause cancer. Also contains carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide which are poisonous to the human body. The American Cancer Society reported that approximately 173,000 deaths were caused by tobacco in 1999 and 20,000 more where caused by alcohol and tobacco combined. Alcohol and tobacco are mainly used together and increase possibilities of developing cancer. People who quit smoking when the first precancerous signs appear, may be fortunate enough to have their lungs return to normal and signs of cancer eliminated within five years. This is still be researched at this time and there is disagreement on this subject.
• Currently research is being done on the effects of vitamin D on cancer. Some finding are that daily exposure to the sun on a limited basis could supply the vitamin D you need. However, to determine how much sun a person should get depends on there skin type. A dark-skinned person may need more exposure to the sun to get an adequate mount of vitamin D, while a fair skinned person shouldn't try to get their vitamin D from the sun.
• Currently research is suggesting niacin might be a key player in cancer prevention and treatment through its activities in cellular repair.
• Doxorubicin is a type of antibiotic used only in cancer chemotherapy. Prolonged use of doxorubicin may cause severe damage to the heart, even years after you have finished taking this medication. It may be possible to alleviate a part of these side effects by supplementing with vitamin A and E along with selenium.
• Dr. Hans Nieper, a physician and cancer specialist from Germany tried fresh raw cabbage and carrot juice to treat cancer patients with positive outcome. He also tried a treatment of Carnivora from a South American plant to attempt to cure cancer.
• Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, an immunologist based in New York, created a cancer treatment which is done daily, under study by the National Institutes of Health that introduces changes of diet, nutritional supplementation, and toxin-removal systems. This included the use of coffee enemas.

Vitamin C is a major circulating water-soluble antioxidant, and vitamin E is a major lipid-soluble antioxidant. Diets rich in fruit and vegetables are found to be associated with a decreased risk for cancers of esophagus, stomach, colon and lungs.
• In many cases cancers treated with chemotherapy may go into remission. Chemotherapy uses highly toxic medications that can kill cancer cells, but they also may kill normal cells in the process, thus causing side effects such as hair loss, severe nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, sterility and damage to the kidneys and heart. However, there are nutrients that aid the body bypass some of the damage done by chemotherapy. Some of these nutrients are, vitamin B6, (pyridoxine), coenzyme Q10, glutathione, and vitamin C.

• It has been found that patients suffering from cancer tend to have lower cholesterol levels. The thought is that these patients consume more polyunsaturated fats and this can increase cancer risks. The conclusion was that patients with low cholesterol levels are at a higher risk for dying from cancer.
• It has been said that some cancers respond well to dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Research is still on-going in DMSO's potential role in the breaking up of tumors and killing of metastatic cancer cells. It has been reported that some physicians are utilizing DMSO alone or combined with other therapies in treating some cancers.
• It has been suggested that dairy products boost the risk of developing cancer. It is believed by others though, that the fat content in dairy products and not the milk that is responsible for this. A couple of good low-fat substitutes are almonds, rice and soy milk. The American Journal of Epidemiology has discredited idea that there is a link between lactose and galaxies and ovarian cancer.
• It is believed that calcium might inhibit precancerous cells from turning into cancerous cells.

Healthy Diet and nutrition is vital in the battle against cancer. If your body is rundown, your chances of winning the battle is greatly reduced.
• Laboratory tests are showing promise in the use of Propolis, substance produced by bees, to fight cancer. It is known that bee products contain cancer fighting properties and is abundant in polyphenolic antioxidants.
• Melatonin is a hormone that manages the production of estrogen and testosterone, along with other tasks. It is also believed that it may be responsible for managing other hormones that help some types of tumor growths. Research is in progress to determine the effects of melatonin as an anticancerous agent. Melatonin has been beneficial in the battle of male and female reproductive system cancers, breast cancer, and prostrate cancer. Current studies are being done to discover the effects of long-term use of melatonin in supplement form.
• New and promising test are being developed as Pap tests. Three of these are ThinPrep, PAPNET, and AutoPap 300 QC that will greatly decrease the likelihood of missing a diagnosis of cervical cancer. It must be noted that at this time none of these systems can be considered perfect. It is also still very important that women follow the procedures given to them before having the Pap smear procedure performed. Another test available is the Hybrid Capture HPV DNA test, which can discover the presence of sexually transmitted human papillomaviruses (HPV's), that is associated with cervical cancer. Ongoing research is in progress looking for other tests that may detect cervical cancer. At this time an at-home test that utilizes a tampon-like probe that is made to measure cervical cells is being tested. It would be wise for women that are considered high risk for getting cervical cancer to consult with their physicians on which would be the best test for them to have done.
• Non-small cell lung cancer is a disease where malignant cells form in the tissue of the lung. This type of lung cases can be responsible for most of the cases in the United States. Medications used to treat this cancer may be, porfirmer (Photofrin), paclitaxel (Taxol) along with the commonly used cancer drug cisplatin (Platinol), and gemcitabine (Gemzar) along with cisplatin. Docetaxel (Taxotere) is another drug that has been approved for use in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer that has not been responsive to cisplatin-based chemotherapy.
• Onyx-015 is a genetically modified cold virus that was designed to home in on and kill cancer cells. The University of Texas and the University of Glasgow in Scotland are currently performing studies on this drug. The following is a list of drugs being tested for cancer therapies:
• Patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or even may be in remission must have excellent dietary habits and take nutritional supplements. Shark liver oil has been found beneficial in use prior to radiation therapy as it protects healthy tissue from injury during therapy. Shark liver oil contains A group of compounds known as alkylglycerols, or AKGs, vitamin A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, trace minerals, and squalene. It was reported in an article in the European Journal of Cancer in 1997 that glutamine could lower adverse side effects from chemotherapy.
• Pesticide residue was classified as one of the top three environmental cancer risks. This was the findings of seventy-five Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) experts.
• Presently a new drug, Investigational New Drug (IND) is in the works. One of the ingredients in this drug is an extract of maitake. This drug may prove to be beneficial in the treatment of advanced breast and prostrate cancers.
• Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation from x-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. They point the x-ray right at the tumor. Of course this has adverse side effects, such as headache, nausea and vomiting, fever, and loss of appetite.
• Research is rapidly advancing the treatments and new drugs being made available to fight cancer. Some of these newer treatments are getting the stamp of approval from the FDA. Taxotere is one of the new approved drugs that is used to treat advanced cancers where chemotherapy regimens have failed.
• Researchers believe that women smokers are more apt to get lung cancer than men. Secondhand smoke is responsible for an estimated 3,000 lung cancer deaths among U.S. nonsmokers each year.
• Selenium is an antioxidant that might help control cell damage that can lead to cancer. Selenium is especially found in plant foods such as rice, wheat, brazil nuts, pork, turkey, pasta, bagels, pinto beans, navy beans, and seafood's such as flounder and tuna. People that were found to have low levels of selenium were more at risk of getting cancers, such as breast, prostrate, lung, esophageal, leukemia, and ovarian cancers. If you are interested in taking selenium, supplements consult your physician first. Taking too much selenium daily can be toxic to the body.
• Seven to ten servings of fruits and vegetables daily may lower the risk of cancer by approximately 30%. Phytochemicals in the plant foods are thought to be responsible for this and is currently being studied are the following:
• Some cancers such as lung, pancreas, liver, bone, advanced colon and breast cancers do not respond well to the common therapies of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
• The American Cancer Society has determined that estrogen replacement therapy decreases the chances of osteoporosis and Alzheimer's disease in postmenopausal women. At the same time they reported it many increase breast cancer and uterine cancer. Estriol, a natural form of estrogen, may be a better choice for post-menopausal women in the reduction of risks for cancers.
• The Cancer Control Convention in Japan stated that germanium (a natural substance with virtually no demonstrated toxicity), might be useful in finding a prevention or cure for cancer. Germanium is classified as a food supplement and not a drug. It has been discovered that decreased rates of goiter and breast cancer is found in Japan and Iceland. Insufficient amounts of iodine may be a link to breast cancer. In Japan and Iceland the soil has been found to contain abundant amounts of iron and selenium. Also, it is well known that the Japanese people eat a lot of fish, vegetables, and drink green tea. These are nutritious and healthy foods which are sure to be a factor in their low cancer rates.
• The University of Illinois College of Medicine performed a four-year study on antioxidants use for cancerous tumors. They found that taking increased levels of antioxidants could help to protect individuals against cancerous tumors.
• There has been a great deal of concern that high-voltage power lines could contribute to developing cancer for those living near them. The National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS) have been researching this and stated that even though it could be possible, it is not likely to be the case. It is believed that more research on this subject is needed.
• There is a multitude of types of mushrooms that contain beneficial sources of vitamin D, B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), minerals, and amino acids. Their primary usefulness is in building up the body's immune system T cells that search for and annihilate cancer cells.. Shiitake, zhu ling, enoki, reishi, and maitake mushrooms may have these same anti-cancer abilities.
• Vitamin E is the body's main fat soluble antioxidant. A vitamin E supplement from Prolongevity, Gamma E Tocopherol formula, contains gamma-tocopherol, delta-tocopherol, alpha-tocopherol, and beta-tocopherol. These are all natural forms of vitamin E and offers strong protection from dangerous free radicals.
• Women that are obese are at high risk for developing cancer of the uterine lining, gallbladder, cervical , and breast cancer. These obese women also fair poorly if they get breast cancer. The adrenal glands, generated by hormones, convert into estrogen in fat tissue. Therefore, the greater the amount of fat present, the higher the woman's estrogen levels will be. Cells in the breast and reproductive system are stimulated to divide by estrogen. It is also noted that obese men are at a higher risk for developing colon and rectal cancer.

• Alternate between coffee and fresh wheatgrass enemas daily. This removes toxins from your body. Lemon water enemas and garlic water enemas are also beneficial a couple times a week.
• Certain fasting programs are acceptable.
• Completely stay away from the following foods: junk food, processed refined foods, salt, sugar, peanuts, saturated fats, and white flour. The following substitutions are acceptable: whole wheat or rye for white flour; sea salt, potassium, or kelp for salt; and molasses or maple syrup for sugar. Only herbal teas are allowed. Refrain from alcohol and caffeine.
• Cook only with stainless steel and glass cookware. Wooden cooking utensils are recommended.
• Diet should contain at least seven servings of whole-grain foods daily. Mix up the grains so you are getting five different types of grain weekly.
• Do not drink tap water. Consume only spring water or steam-distilled water. Also, be make sure you do not take a bath in water that contains chlorine, as it can damage your body by just soaking in it.
• Exercise is extremely important. It will lift your spirits and keep your body strong.
• Get rid of carcinogens in your home.
• Go easy on the dairy products. Occasionally you may have yogurt, kefir, or raw cheese.
• In order to boost your immune system, include a lot of garlic and onions in your diet. Garlic supplements are available, if desired.
• Include fresh beet juice, carrot juice, asparagus juice, and fresh cabbage juice regularly in your diet regimen. Also include fresh fruit juices from apples, black currants, grapes, and black cherries.
• Include the following in your diet: unpolished brown rice, nuts, seeds, grains, millet cereal, bran, oat, and wheat.
• Invest in a chlorine filter for your shower head.
• Lycopene is another important weapon in the fight against cancer. You can get this by eating raw tomatoes and products that are tomato-based.
• Obtain anthocyanins (antioxidants) by consuming tart cherries, cherry pies, cherry jams, and cherry juice (without sugar).
• Obtain laetrile, thought to be a cancer-fighter, by consuming ten raw almonds daily.
• Sprouts should be lightly cooked. Wash and eat alfalfa raw.
• Stay away from animal protein, lunch meat, hot dogs, and smoked or cured meat. Broiled fish several times a week is acceptable when your health is in good condition.
• Stay away from iron supplements. Too much iron may contribute to the growth of cancer cells.
• Stay away from microwave ovens as the radiation may cause further damage. Sit at least 8 feet from your television. X-rays are not recommended for people with cancer.
• Stay away from stressful situations. Learn methods to deal with unavoidable stress.
• Take only prescribed medications.
• Test your home for radon with a home testing kit. Immediately take care of any problems you discover.
• The following vegetables are also an important part of your diet: Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, pumpkin, yams, squash, and carrots. Also include plenty of blueberries, grapes, strawberries, cherries, legumes, peas, lentils, raspberries, apples, cantaloupes, Brazil nuts, red beans, plums, and oranges. Your body will need the extra antioxidants (from certain fruits) and chlorophyll (from green plants) to combat the cancer.
