Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

About
A group of symptoms, of unknown cause, characterized by unexplained fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, feeling poorly, trouble thinking, and sometimes, fever and/or lymph node swelling.

Notes
  • Make sure you are taking supplements for overall good health. If you are not taking these basic supplements, we recommend Enfuz from Vitabase. When you take a small packet of pills each day, you get all the basic nutrition you need. Each packet contains a multi-vitamin, CoQ10 (for heart health), Omega 3, Vitamin D-3, a probiotic, and a powerful set of antioxidants to help your body fight off disease.
  • 1. Doxepin (Sinequan) - is a tricyclic antidepressant that is given to relieve pain, promote sleep, and relieve fatigue symptoms. Doxepin also may relieve the following symptoms: nasal congestion, gastritis, muscle tension, and tightness. Other tricyclic medications used are amitriptyline, desipramine, and nortriptyline.
  • 2. Fluoxetine (Prozac) - is believed to work by inhibiting the release or affects the action of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin functions as a neurotransmitter, regulating the delivery of messages from one section of the brain to another. One of the side effects of this drug is insomnia. Prozac does boost a patients energy level.
  • 3. Gamma-globulin treatment - a blood product is given in a transfusion to supply the protective antibodies that is thought to be absent in patients suffering with CFS.
  • Colloidal silver appears to be a powerful, natural antibiotic and antiviral preventative that may be beneficial in holding bacteria in check.
  • Depression is a significant symptom with people who suffer from CFS. Most physicians prescribe antidepressants to treat these patients. Below is a list of antidepressants most often prescribed:
  • Due to the fact that CFS resembles many other disorders, it is very important not to self-diagnose. If you have been diagnosed with CFS, consult a health care professional that is experienced in treating this disorder.
  • During a study being performed by Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore a possible link was discovered between chronic fatigue and a defect in the body's mechanisms for maintaining blood pressure. Twenty three individuals with CFS participated in this study, and twenty two of them had a syndrome where the body's answered inappropriately to prolonged standing. The heart rate slows and blood pressure dropped, which made the individuals lightheaded, then were over come with feelings of weakness and exhaustion that hung on for days. When treatment was given for the blood pressure problem, a compelling percentage of them improved.
  • In some of the studies done there was a link to chemicals and/or foods that the individuals were sensitive to and hypoglycemia as possible causes of CFS. In the last fifty years people have been subjected to more different chemicals than all of the rest of mankind combined. There should be no surprise that some people have become sensitive to chemicals.
  • It is of the utmost importance that family, friends and coworkers are aware that this is a real disorder and not treat the individual as though they are just lazy and faking symptoms.
  • Many individual with chronic fatigue have a problem with parasites. There are two supplements that are recommended for this: Parasitin+ from Vaxa International and Parasi Veda from Solaray.
  • Many individuals with CFS find that they have problems with side effects from prescription antidepressants. Two supplements that work as well as antidepressants are: Sadenosylmethionine (SAMe) and 5-hydroxy L-tryptophan (5-HTP). These supplements are beneficial in helping to relax muscle tension and induce sleep.
  • More information on this subject can be obtained from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a part of the National Institutes of Health.
  • Pregnenolone is a precursor steroid hormone that is the mother of a variety of other vital hormones. It is believed that hormones may be responsible for some CFS problems. Pregnenolone is thought to be able to enhance resistance to stress and reduced adrenal exhaustion, which would then lessen fatigue.
  • Some of the amino acids that may be beneficial to patients with chronic fatigue are: tyrosine, leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, and taurine.
  • Some people suffering from CFS have found that taking regular cold showers can help improve CFS symptoms. Others find help with taking hot baths or shower. It must be noted though that persons having heart or circulatory disorders and even some other serious health disorders should avoid cold or hot water treatments. These people should consult their physicians before trying any new treatments.
  • The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are the same as many other health problems such as, anemia, cardiovascular disease, depression, fibromyalgia, hepatitis, and even lyme disease. If you are experiencing acute fatigue that lasts longer than two weeks consult your physician to check for underlying disorders and possible treatments.
  • There is some affirmation that points to exhausted adrenal glands and an upset in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The HPA axis, traditionally has been seen as the body's stress system, and controls levels of cortisol and other important stress related hormones. In CFS and burnout the HPA axis is suppressed, which results in the many physical and mental symptoms associated with these conditions.

Advice
  • Avoid aspirin.
  • Drink eight glasses of water a day. Also drink fresh vegetable juices.
  • In order to boost your immune system and give you needed energy, incorporate the following into your diet: raw nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, skinless turkey, seeds, and deep-water fish. Half of your diet should consist of fresh juices and raw foods.
  • Include acidophilus, yogurt, or kefir in your diet.
  • Include chlorophyll in your diet through tablets or liquid vegetables from wheatgrass or leafy vegetables. A vegetable-based protein is also beneficial.
  • Make sure you are well-rested. Exercise is helpful when done in moderation. Practice breathing deeply.
  • Make sure you consume enough fiber to have at least one bowel movement daily. Cleansing enemas are also beneficial.
  • Refrain from the following foods: sugar, tea, soft drinks, yeast products, white flour, coffee, alcohol, bread, pasta, processed foods, fried foods, junk food, and shellfish.
