Problems can occur should the lower muscle tighten which can cause it to go into a spasm instead of easing up.
  • It is not recommended to use laxatives on a regular basis as they can create more serious problems such as diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bloating, dehydration, and even damage to the colon. Other symptoms that may be evident are cramping pains, gassiness, and variation in the stool consistence. Many experts seem to feel that stress may be a cause of irritable bowel syndrome.
  • If constipation occurs frequently, the possibility of cancer or another obstruction in the lower bowel will need to be ruled out with the use of a proctoscopic examination or a barium enema. You could also have colon cancer if there is blood present in the stool, severe cramping occurs, you have a tender, distended abdomen, or the stool is markedly narrower. However, cancer can still occur even without these indications.
