Down Syndrome

About
Down Syndrome occurs when an embryo contains an extra chromosome 21 (three instead of two). People with Down Syndrome have similar physical features such as weak muscle tone, small head, slanted eyes, furrowed tongue, flatter face, etc. They also struggle with mental retardation, some more than others. Those with Down Syndrome are more likely to develop further complications as they get older, such as lung problems and Alzheimer's Disease. With the help offered in today's society, these individuals can develop and lead happy lives.

Notes
  • Make sure you are taking supplements for overall good health. If you are not taking these basic supplements, we recommend Enfuz from Vitabase. When you take a small packet of pills each day, you get all the basic nutrition you need. Each packet contains a multi-vitamin, CoQ10 (for heart health), Omega 3, Vitamin D-3, a probiotic, and a powerful set of antioxidants to help your body fight off disease.
  • Contact The National Down Syndrome Society for additional help and support.
  • Doctors often perform amniocentesis on women who become pregnant after age 34. These women have a greater chance of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome.
  • Patiently work with the child to develop his mental and motor skills. Infancy is the best time to begin working on motor skills.
  • Talk to your doctor about a program using vitamin/mineral supplementation that may be helpful for the individual with Down syndrome.

Advice
  • Children with Down Syndrome require a lot of patience - especially while they are eating. A balanced diet is absolutely necessary. Provide plenty of fresh, whole foods like vegetables, meat, fish and seafood, nuts and seeds, tofu, apples, kelp, blackstrap molasses, soybeans, cornmeal, figs, apricots, and brewer's yeast. Use products that contain gluten (oats, wheat, rye, and barley) sparingly. Sugars, alcohol, dairy products, and refined foods are not recommended.
  • Enhance oxygen flow to the brain by teaching your child deep-breathing techniques and by encouraging exercise every day.
  • Have attainable goals for your child. Do not neglect your other children while caring for those with special needs.
  • Stimulate your child with music, explorative toys, talking, and interacting with you and others.
  • Supplements in liquid or spray form are recommended.
  • Your child needs your love and attention as much as possible. Hold him and tell him that you love him.
