A rise in the temperature of the body; frequently a symptom of infection.

  • A child under 3 months who has a fever 103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher should be taken to a doctor immediately. If a feverish child has swelling in his throat, a stiff neck, or is disoriented, he should be taken to a doctor immediately as this could indicate a more serious condition.
  • A child with a fever should not take aspirin.
  • A fever below 102 degrees Fahrenheit can actually be a good sign that your body is getting rid of infection. Do not interfere if you can help it.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Juices are also good.
  • During a fever, supplements with iron or zinc should be avoided. The body misuses iron while it is fighting an infection. The body cannot properly absorb zinc during a fever.
  • Get sufficient rest.
  • Homeopathic remedies such as Belladonna and Aconite napellus can help lower the fever. A 12x strength diluted in water (5 drops to a glass of water) every half hour is beneficial.
  • If a fever is over 102 degrees Fahrenheit (103 in a child), try to get the fever down and get in touch with your doctor for further instructions.
  • It is wise to see a doctor if the fever is accompanied by any of the following symptoms: blood in the urine, frequent urination, pain in the abdomen, shaking chills, alternating between chills and sweats, headache and vomiting, watery diarrhea for more than 24 hours, swollen glands, or rashes.
  • Keep surrounding temperature the same.
  • Sponge baths are a good way to cool off. Avoid rubbing alcohol as the fumes may be irritating.
  • Sweating helps to break a fever. In order to promote sweating, you can bundle yourself in a blanket for twenty minutes. Drink a lot of fluids afterwards.
  • Wait until fever subsides before eating solids.

Purposes: A tbsp. steeped in a pint of water and used as an enema is soothing and reduces fevers. It is also said to be beneficial in treating congestion and constipation which can raise a fever in the body.

Catnip Tea, Dandelion, and Lobelia
Type: Internal
Purposes: Combining Catnip Tea, Dandelion and Lobelia and making into a tea or taking as an extract has proven beneficial for reducing fevers. Lobelia can be taken alone by taking 1/2 tsp of extract or tincture every three to four hours until the fever is gone. Should this cause an upset stomach, cut back to 1/4 tsp.
Cautions: Lobelia is not to be taken on an ongoing basis.

Elderberry Tea
Type: Internal/External
Purposes: Drinking Elderberry Tea usually promotes heavy perspiration and sweating; thus helping in reducing fevers. Hot steam baths have also been beneficial.

Purposes: Echinacea Root poultices are known to help in lowering fevers. Do not reheat or reuse a poultice, discard and prepare a new one.

Hyssop, Licorice Root, Thyme, and Yarrow Tea
Type: Internal
Purposes: Make a tea combining these four herbs and drink as needed. This will promote heavy sweating and in this way reduce the fever.
Cautions: Licorice is not to be used if you have high blood pressure. Not to be used on a daily basis for more than seven days at a time.

Blackthorn, Echinacea, Fenugreek Seed, Feverfew, Ginger, and Poke Root
Type: Internal
Purposes: These six herbs all contain beneficial properties that aid in reducing fevers.
Cautions: Feverfew is not to be use if you are pregnant.
