Food Poisoning


About
Nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, fever, and headache may all point to food poisoning. There are different types of food poisoning. The more common types are E.coli, Salmonellosis, Staphylococcal, and Rotavirus. These and other types of food poisoning may last a few minutes, a few hours, or a few weeks.

  • At the direction of a doctor or the poison control center, vomiting may be induced using syrup of ipecac. This should help remove some of the harmful toxins caused by the poisoning.
  • Call the regional poison control center in your area if you think you may have food poisoning. They are available 24 hours a day. They can help you determine the next course of action.
  • Cleansing enemas will help detoxify the body.
  • Food poisoning that comes from a restaurant should be brought to the attention of the local health department in order to stop more cases of food poisoning from occurring.
  • If vomiting continues for longer than 24 hours, get a sample of the vomit for testing. Watch out for choking that may accompany the vomiting.
  • In order to keep immune system healthy, immediately take 6 charcoal tablets. Six hours later, take another 6 tablets. Drink a lot of water. This treatment will help remove some of the toxins from the body.
  • Rehydrate your body with plenty of water and other liquids that provide electrolytes. This is especially important if vomiting has been accompanied by diarrhea.
  • See your doctor if symptoms persist or if they get worse.
