Hay Fever

Hay fever is an allergic condition affecting the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes. It is most often characterized by nasal discharge, sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. Hayfever is generally caused by an abnormal sensitivity to airborne pollen.

  • If you need to be outside, morning time is best as the pollen is still settled then. Be sure to keep the air conditioning on in your car when you are out.
  • Pets should either stay outside or inside so they do not track pollen back and forth.
  • Since clothes and hair can hold onto pollen, it is a good idea to wash your hair and put on new clothes after being outside.
  • Stay away from anything that triggers allergies.
  • Stay away from junk food, sugar, white flour, cakes, coffee, dairy products other than yogurt, packaged or canned foods, tobacco, soft drinks, pies, and chocolate.
  • Stay away from tobacco smoke and alcohol.
  • Stay inside during allergy season.
  • Use a dryer or drying rack to dry laundry instead of placing it outside where it will get full of pollen. If participating in outdoor activities, you may wish to wear a mask or goggles.

Ephedra (ma huang)

Purposes: The stems of Ephedra species contain alkaloid ephedrine which is beneficial in treating many respiratory complaints. It has antiviral effects, against shortness of breath, coughing, congestion and bronchitis. No evidence has been found to show it can cure allergies. Using this herb for long periods can cause weakness to the adrenal glands.
Cautions: This herb should not be used by people who are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or suffering from high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, dehydration, anxiety, heart disease, or insomnia.

Type: Internal
Purposes: Inhaling Eucalyptus vapors opens bronchial tubes in the lungs, relieving congestion. To prepare the steam vapors do the following: boil a quart of water and remove from pan from the stove. Add 6 to 8 drops of Eucalyptus extract to the boiled water. Lean over this preparation with the towel over your head and breathe deeply through the nose, then hold your breath as long as possible. Also works to add Eucalyptus to your bath.

Eyebright and Lady's Mantle liquid extract
Type: Internal
Purposes: Make a tea from these two herbs by dropping 20 to 30 drops into water or you can use the extract by putting it under your tongue, hold for a couple of minutes then swallow. This has been beneficial in treating hay fever symptoms. Repeat 2 times daily. It is best to drink a glass of water after taking the extract.

Purposes: Place a dropperful into your mouth, hold for a couple of minutes, then swallow. By performing this procedure it is believed you can stop a sore throat from happening. Also relieves itchy throat and coughing.
Cautions: Do not use goldenseal for more than seven days, and don't take it if you are pregnant. Check with your doctor if you have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or glaucoma. If allergic to ragweed, use Goldenseal with caution.
