Also known as the flu, is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. It attacks the respiratory tract in humans (nose, throat, and lungs).

Astragalus, Black Cherry, Echinacea, Ginger, Goldenseal, Pau d'arco, Slippery Elm, and Yarrow Tea
Type: Internal
Purposes: These eight herbs all combine properties that are beneficial in treating influenza. Can add peppermint tea in any of these eight teas and it is believed this will clear the nasal passages making breathing easier. Echinacea is mild enough to use on children.
Cautions: Do not use goldenseal for more than seven days, and don't take it if you are pregnant. Check with your doctor if you have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or glaucoma. If allergic to ragweed, use Goldenseal with caution.

Purposes: Is an excellent expectorant that clears mucus from the lungs.

Catnip Tea and Lobelia Tincture
Type: Internal
Purposes: Combining Catnip Tea, and Lobelia and making into a tea or taking as an extract has proven beneficial for reducing fevers. Lobelia can be taken alone by taking 1/2 tsp of extract or tincture every three to four hours until the fever is gone. Should this cause an upset stomach, cut back to 1/4 tsp. This is mild enough to use on children.
Cautions: Lobelia is not to be taken on an ongoing basis. Do not use this mixture if you are pregnant or lactating. Do not give to children under one year of age.

Cat's Claw

Purposes: Taking cat's claw may help to reduce the time you have the flu. Cold-X10 from Olympian Labs is a contains cat's claw and other nutrients that help to treat flu and colds.

Cayenne (capsicum)
Type: Internal
Purposes: Cayenne powder can be added to soups and foods. It is an effective expectorant and has been used to breakup mucus buildup in the sinuses, throat, and lungs. Ginger is beneficial in the treatment of the flu.

Ephedra (ma huang)

Purposes: Inhaling Eucalyptus vapors opens bronchial tubes in the lungs, relieving congestion. To prepare the steam vapors do the following: boil a quart of water and remove from pan from the stove. Add 6 to 8 drops of Eucalyptus extract to the boiled water. Lean over this preparation with the towel over your head and breathe deeply through the nose, then hold your breath as long as possible.

Fenugreek and Slippery Elm
Type: Internal
Purposes: These two herbs work together well, Fenugreek breaks up congestion while Slippery Elm expels the mucus and phlegm from the body.

Fenu-Thyme from Nature's Way

Purposes: This herb clears the nasal passage and sinuses of mucus by thinning it making it easier to expel. Healing will be faster as this herb does not dry up the mucus.
