Kidney Stones


About
Rock-like substances that form in the kidneys of some people. They can cause blockage of the urinary tract, which in turn can cause cystitis.

Advice
  • Be sure to get enough calcium and magnesium to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Magnesium can be obtained through certain foods like tofu, soybeans, brown rice, and seafood.
  • Calcium promotes the elimination of oxalates in the stools. It is wise to use calcium supplements in conjunction with meals to help this happen if your family history puts you at risk for kidney stones. If you have already experienced kidney stones, you should not use calcium supplements.
  • Consume steam-distilled water only. You can put trace mineral drops into your drinking water, if desired.
  • If you have high levels of potassium and phosphates, these need to be decreased in your diet. Avoid salt, potassium chloride, and carbonated beverages.
  • Limit the amount of animal protein you consume. Too much protein can cause excess calcium, phosphorus, and uric acid to build up in the kidneys. Kidney stones may develop.
  • Maintain an active lifestyle as being sedentary may contribute to calcium buildup, while exercise can encourage calcium to move toward the bones where it is most needed.
  • Make sure you have plenty of vitamin A in your diet. The following foods are recommended sources of vitamin A: cantaloupe, alfalfa, carrots, apricots, pumpkin, squash, and sweet potatoes.
  • One way to encourage the passing of small kidney stones is by consuming a lot of water, waiting 20 minutes, and then running up and down stairs.
  • Refrain from taking products containing L-cystine if you have experienced cystine stones in the past. The effects of L-cystine can be minimized by taking a dose of calcium three times the amount of L-cystine. Failure to do so may cause kidney stones made of crystallized cystine.
  • See your doctor if the stone does not pass on its own. He can give you further instructions concerning tests or treatments.
  • Squeeze the juice from half a lemon and mix with 8 ounces of water. Drink this mixture every half hour to help alleviate pain. Fresh apple juice can be used alternately.
  • Stay away from refined sugar as it contributes to insulin production and calcium buildup.
  • Stay away from the following foods that have oxalic acid or can bring about oxalic acid: beets, beet greens, asparagus, celery, blueberries, eggs, grapes, fish, rhubarb, sorrel, parsley, Swiss chard, spinach, and cabbage and similar vegetables. Stay away from chocolate, dried figs, alcohol, cocoa, nuts, pepper, and poppy seeds.
  • Try to consume 3 quarts of water daily in order to promote healthy kidneys. Unsweetened cranberry juice increases acid in the urine. To help keep stones from forming, try consuming a glass of warm water with fresh lemon juice in it right when you get up.
