Periodontal Disease


About
Any disease of the teeth or gums can be considered a Periodontal Disease. Gingivitis is the beginning of the disease and should be treated quickly so as to avoid further damage. Nutrition is an important factor in keeping gums healthy.

  • Periodontal disease can affect more than just the mouth. Heart disease, stroke, lung disease, ulcers, uncontrolled diabetes, and premature birth may result from this disease. Periodontal pockets contain bacteria which may get into the bloodstream.
  • Periodontal disease may be spread to others with whom the infected person has intimate contact.
  • Regularly check to make sure you are getting all the areas of your teeth when you brush. Drugstores carry tablets you can chew to help you see missed spots.
  • Sanitizing your toothbrush between brushing is important. Automatic sanitizers are available. Hydrogen peroxide or grapefruit seed extract are also good ways to get rid of germs and bacteria.
  • See a periodontist to treat periodontal disease.
  • Smoking further complicates mouth and gum disease.
  • Surgery in which infected tissue is removed and bone is reshaped may be necessary if the disease becomes too severe.
  • Those with allergies have a slighter chance of losing teeth from periodontal disease because of their stronger immune systems.
  • Tooth decay and periodontal disease may result from lack of saliva (known as dry mouth). Other factors contribute to dry mouth, which gets worse over time: consuming alcohol, age, prescription or over-the-counter drugs, and diabetes. To boost saliva output, chew ice chips, drink plenty of water, chew carrots or celery, and chew sugar-free gum.
  • Visit your dentist regularly in order to prevent periodontal disease and to catch it early if it does show up. This can also help in the early detection of oral cancer.


Advice
  • A soft natural-bristled toothbrush is recommended. Be sure to brush the tongue, gums, and under the gum line two times or more a day.
  • Antibiotics are not recommended as they rid your body of friendly bacteria and do not work as well in the mouth area as they do in other parts of your body.
  • Before brushing, rinse your mouth with a dental rinse that fights plaque.
  • Boost circulation in gums by massaging them with your fingertips.
  • Clove oil and ice packs on the gums can help to alleviate tooth pain until you can get to the dentist.
  • Do not consume sugar or refined carbohydrates as they promote plaque buildup.
  • Flossing every day is beneficial. Un-waxed dental floss is recommended for hard-to-get places.
  • High-fiber foods are important. Whole grains, legumes, and vegetables are recommended.
  • Inflamed gums require special treatment. Soften the bristles on your toothbrush by running them under hot water; then brush your teeth carefully.
  • Keep your toothbrush clean of bacteria by disinfecting it between brushing. Get a new toothbrush every month to control this disease.
  • Make sure your dentist office is clean, and that they take the proper measures in order to avoid spreading infection.
  • Mix goldenseal powder (contents of one capsule) or liquid extract with your toothpaste and brush your teeth with this mixture for a month. Rotate toothpaste brands every month.
  • Nutrients are important. Green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, whole grains, and meat are beneficial. Be sure to get enough vitamin C in order to protect against gingivitis and pyorrhea. Vitamin A can help maintain healthy gums and is important during the developmental stages of children's teeth. Sodium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, calcium, and potassium are beneficial minerals.
  • The contents of a vitamin E capsule rubbed over the gums can promote healing and relieve pain.
  • Use a tongue scraper after brushing or flossing to prevent bacteria buildup.
  • Use an interdental-space brush to clean between your teeth.
