Ulcerative Colitis

About
Ulcerative Colitis occurs when ulcers form on the lining of the colon and the lining becomes inflamed. Bloody diarrhea, hard stools, gas, bloating, and pain can result.

Notes
  • Make sure you are taking supplements for overall good health. If you are not taking these basic supplements, we recommend Enfuz from Vitabase. When you take a small packet of pills each day, you get all the basic nutrition you need. Each packet contains a multi-vitamin, CoQ10 (for heart health), Omega 3, Vitamin D-3, a probiotic, and a powerful set of antioxidants to help your body fight off disease.
  • A colonoscopy is recommended for those who have suffered from ulcerative colitis for longer than 5 years.
  • Be sure to get enough vitamin K as deficiency may cause ulcerative colitis. Vitamin K can be diminished by sulfa drugs and mineral oil.
  • Diet and lifestyle changes may help with this disorder. Check for food sensitivities that may be complicating this disorder.
  • inflammatory bowel diseases include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Similar symptoms occur with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but it is non-inflammatory.
  • Intravenous magnesium and vitamin B6 are beneficial muscle relaxants and can help with attacks.
  • Sometimes the symptoms for ulcerative colitis are similar to the achiness and painful joints of arthritis. If diet change does not help, colitis may not be the problem.
  • Surgery may be necessary if other treatments are ineffective or if serious complications occur.

Advice
  • A large glass of water may help alleviate pain by cleansing the system.
  • Avoid fats, oils, and high-fat milk and cheese, as these can cause further complications.
  • Avoid tight clothing around your waist.
  • Consume enough liquids. Water, carrot juice, cabbage juice, and green drinks are beneficial. Also, juices can be enhanced with liquid chlorophyll.
  • Consume fruit and diluted fruit juices between meals so as to avoid consuming them on an empty stomach.
  • Consume plenty of raw or steamed vegetables.
  • Diet should be low-carb and high in vegetable protein. Alfalfa, barley, and skinless fish, chicken, or turkey are recommended.
  • Enemas made of lukewarm water are helpful in alleviating pain and cleansing the colon. Wheatgrass juice works well as a retention enema. An L. bifidus enema can help relieve gas and bloating.
  • Garlic promotes healing and helps fight infection.
  • Get a lot of fiber in your diet from barley, whole-grains, oat bran, brown rice, lentils, and rice cakes.
  • Go on a two-week diet of baby food. Also include extra fiber in your diet. Glucomannan taken a half hour before eating is recommended. Supplemental fiber should be taken at a different time than other supplements and medication.
  • Keep track of what you eat. Notice any reactions you get so you know which foods you should avoid.
  • Obtain vitamin K from dark green leafy vegetables.
  • Soft foods are best during times of pain. Oat bran and steamed vegetables should be blended thoroughly. Rice or oat bran added to your cereal can help keep your colon clean.
  • Some fasting programs are beneficial.
  • Stay away from carbonated beverages, caffeine, red meats, sugar, processed foods, and spicy foods.
  • Stretching exercises can enhance digestion. Proteolytic enzymes are also beneficial to digestion.
  • Substitute broiled or baked foods for sautéed or fried foods.
  • Substitute soy-based cheese for dairy cheese. Soymilk and rice milk are a good substitute for cow's milk.
