White patches of skin with dark borders is called Vitiligo. This skin condition is often not a serious threat, but is more of a nuisance to some people. In some cases, it may indicate an underlying condition.

- PABA and magnesium treatments are sometimes effective in bringing skin back to normal color. Sometimes hair will return back to its normal color, too.
- Skin repigmentation may be enhanced by creams that have fluorinated steroids.
- Some research has been done to see if transplanting healthy cells to the affected area may help this condition.
- The following antioxidants in creams and lotions may be beneficial: vitamin C, carotenes, green tea, and ginkgo biloba.
- Topical corticosteroids are beneficial for small affected areas.
- Vitiligo may be helped by psoralen and ultraviolet light A (PUVA) therapy. Eye problems, liver damage, nausea, and skin blistering may occur.
- A small amount of sun exposure may actually be beneficial for re-pigmentation. SPF 15 or higher sunscreen should be used on skin when out in the sun.
- Ask your doctor about vitamin B complex plus PABA injections.
- Be very gentle when coming in contact with affected skin. Gentle cleansing is important. Be sure to moisturize. Keep the affected area safe from chemicals or cleansing products with gloves or clothing.
